Gospel Message

The Holy Spirit gives us new birth

1. The Holy Spirit gives us new birth

Jesus said:

John 3:5–6 — “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God… that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

Our natural birth gives us physical life. The Holy Spirit gives us spiritual life—a new birth that prepares us for God’s kingdom.

2. The Holy Spirit makes us children of God

Romans 8:14–16 — “As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God… The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”

The Spirit gives us the inward assurance that we belong to God.

This is not merely a feeling; it is connected with our relationship with Christ and our new life in Him.

3. The Holy Spirit seals us for the day of redemption

This is one of the strongest verses concerning eternity:

Ephesians 4:30 — “Grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”

Also:

Ephesians 1:13–14 — “Ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance…”

The Holy Spirit is God’s seal upon the believer.

A seal speaks of:

  • belonging to God,
  • God’s ownership,
  • God’s promise,
  • God’s protection and purpose.

4. The Holy Spirit is the guarantee of our future inheritance

Ephesians calls Him the “earnest” of our inheritance.

The idea is similar to a down payment or guarantee.

God gives us the Holy Spirit now as a foretaste of everything we will fully receive in eternity.

2 Corinthians 1:22 — God “hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.”

So the presence of the Holy Spirit in us is connected to the promise:

“You belong to Me, and there is more coming.”

5. The Holy Spirit prepares our character for eternity

Eternity is not only about reaching heaven. God is preparing us to be like Christ.

2 Corinthians 3:18 — We “are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”

The Holy Spirit produces:

Galatians 5:22–23 — “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance…”

The Spirit is preparing us now for the kind of life that belongs to God’s eternal kingdom.

6. The Holy Spirit helps us overcome sin

Romans 8:13 — “If ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”

The Holy Spirit gives us power to put sinful practices to death.

This is important because He is preparing us for holiness.

Romans 8:5–6 — “To be spiritually minded is life and peace.”

7. The Holy Spirit keeps our hearts focused on eternal things

Romans 8:5 — “They that are after the Spirit [mind] the things of the Spirit.”

Without the Spirit, we can become consumed with temporary things: money, possessions, recognition, fear, pleasure.

The Holy Spirit keeps reminding us:

“Your life is bigger than this world. You belong to Christ. Your inheritance is eternal.”

8. The Holy Spirit helps us pray toward God’s eternal purpose

Romans 8:26 — “The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities… the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us…”

And:

Romans 8:27 — He “maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

Sometimes we do not know what to pray. The Holy Spirit helps bring our lives into harmony with God’s purpose.

9. The Holy Spirit will participate in our resurrection

This is one of the most beautiful promises:

Romans 8:11 — “If the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he… shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”

The same Spirit connected with the resurrection of Jesus dwells in believers.

Therefore the Holy Spirit’s work does not end when our earthly life ends. He is connected with our future resurrection.

10. The Holy Spirit prepares us for the return of Christ

The Spirit creates longing for Christ.

Revelation 22:17 — “The Spirit and the bride say, Come.”

A Spirit-filled church should increasingly desire:

“Come, Lord Jesus.”

The Holy Spirit does not make us more attached to this passing world. He prepares our hearts for Christ and His eternal kingdom.

A powerful way to see His work

The Holy Spirit works concerning our eternity in this order:

New birth → Adoption → Assurance → Sealing → Sanctification → Perseverance in faith → Resurrection → Eternal inheritance.

And Ephesians 1:13–14 summarizes much of it beautifully:

We believe in Christ → receive the Holy Spirit → are sealed by Him → and He becomes the guarantee of our eternal inheritance.

So the Holy Spirit is not merely preparing us to go to heaven. He is preparing heaven inside us—forming Christ’s nature in us now, until one day we are completely with the Lord forever.
